Nurse Services

Our Nurses have clinic appointments daily for a wide range of appointments including:

  • Cardiovascular Risk Assessments

Our practice nurses can assess your risk of cardiovascular risk by checking your cholesterol levels, blood glucose and BMI. (Body Mass Index)

CVD is the single biggest killer in New Zealand.

Heart attacks, angina, stroke, transient ischaemic attacks (TIA) and peripheral vascular disease are all forms of cardiovascular disease.

If you would like to check whether you may be at risk take the Heart Foundation risk quiz.

  • Cervical Screening

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable of all cancers, and investing a small amount of time in having regular smears every three years, can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer by 90 percent.

The cell changes to the cervix that can lead to cervical cancer are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Most women are infected with this virus at some stage in their life. Fortunately, most of these infections clear spontaneously. Very occasionally, HPV infection persists. When this happens, cell changes may develop which could lead to cervical cancer. The good news is these changes typically happen very slowly, taking many years to progress to cancer. So, having regular smears gives you the best protection from developing cervical cancer.

  • Childhood Immunisations

The New Zealand National Immunisation Schedule is a series of immunisations (including boosters) given at specific times between the ages of six weeks and twelve years.

To get the best possible protection, have the immunisations on time, every time.

  • Green Prescription

If you are struggling to find the motivation to get out and get active, a Green Prescription from your doctor or nurse could be exactly what you're looking for.  This activity programme is designed to kick-start your physical activity levels right away.

A Green Prescription Coordinator will contact you to arrange for a suitable day and time for you to go to the support centre at Sport Otago for a consult. Your appointed Green Prescription coordinator will support you via a three monthly telephone call to see how you are getting on, and can offer further information or guidance.

The coordinators can connect you with other Green Prescription participants by giving you the oppurtunity to take part in group activity sessions such as; aqua jogging, nordic walking and the popular walking series.  They can also offer you one-on-one resistance circuit training and to student dieticians for greater nutritional support.
